Congratulations (slightly belatedly) to Mathilde for her acceptance of Ebay's offer to join Micah in their UI design team. With people like these on their side, it's hard to imagine how the 'bay could possibly go wrong.
Also, congratulations to Chad, who has already begun work at Google along with Kevin and to Haven, who will be working at Catapult Thinking, a design consultancy in Boston.
Makes you think perhaps I should be getting off my duff and finding work for myself, eh? Well, hold that thought a bit longer... ;)

Congratulations to Kenneth, who left today for sunny San Francisco to work for Macromedia. He'll be working on making Dreamweaver better, which is a worthy goal since it sure does need improvement. We're all going to miss him, but his skills are well placed. Good luck to him in this and all his future endeavors.
And San Francisco had better watch out...

Paul's Online Social Science Weblog
internet, people, society & sociology
October 23, 2003, 07:56 AM
So it turns out one of my professors for CSCW, Paul Resnick, has a weblog (on livejournal, no less). Doesn't look like he updates it very often, but when he does he posts some nice, lengthy reflections on his experiences with online communities research. His most recent entries chronicle his experiences at the Online Communities Summit, which looks like it was a fun event. Might be worth checking out; he's in my Newsable sources list!
In his last post, Paul learned about Technorati and complained that he didn't have too many incoming links. Consider this my contribution to the cause. :)

Maybe Rob would have more hits if he had a CSS-based web site....
Food for thought :-D
Oh yeah, I'm an annoying bastard. My bad Rob. (W00t RobLog)

Hey! How come Rob's email gets the hardcore JS-obfuscation and mine gets freaking character entities in the output.
actual output:
Dave
I think you should fix that, or work harder at encouraging me to create a web-site...

Yeah, MT's concept of "spam protection" is pretty unimpressive :-P.
I'll try to modify it to use the hardcore JS obfuscation this weekend. I think it'll involve changing MT's source code, so I'm not sure how easy it'll be.
I'll also try to put up your nifty CSS-positioning layout too. I really do appreciate that you did it and I promise it'll go live soon! :)

My good friend Kerry Bodine has started up a weblog, Styleborg, that focuses on wearable computing and fashion. If you're interested in the new field of wearables, or especially if you're interested in the very new field of fashionable wearables (does this even qualify as a "field" yet?) her weblog is definitely worth checking out.
Welcome to the blogosphere, my queen. You have been assimilated ;).

Know Your Designer: Scott Berkun

Scott Berkun is an amazing man with some amazing ideas whose done some amazing stuff (he worked on the IE and Windows interfaces). I met him at CHI 2003 last April and he seems like a cool guy to boot. I'd strongly recommend perusing his essays if you are at all interested in practical usability and interface design issues. So far, everything I've read there is golden. If I can one day get my own writings section up to half that level of quality, then my work here will be done.

My New Friend Socrates
life & times, people
August 05, 2003, 08:54 PM
At my new apartment, there's a cat that often hangs around outside and sometimes comes in to visit me. Here's a couple pictures:

I've named him (her?) Socrates. I'm not sure if he has an owner or not; he has no collar or identification tags but he seems too well fed to be completely on his own. Either way, he's a personable fellow; he always comes out to greet me if he's around just like Rifken, my mother's cat, always does. The similarities end there, however, Socrates is more affectionate and less inquisitive than Rifken as well as more energetic (probably because he's younger). It's funny how different cats have such distinct personalities when you take the time to get to know them.
I'm thinking of getting some cat food or treats to try to lure Socrates into coming by more often. I'm hoping get all the benefits of having a cat without all of the responsibilities :).

Nice pictures, Rob...however, for portraits in direct sunlight, you really want to use fill flash (that is, force the camera to use the flash, if possible at somewhat less power than normal). That way, people don't have shadows on their eye sockets and necks, which makes them look a little nicer. :-) That said, the outside one still turned out very nice; good job.

Hi Kenneth,
Yeah, I'm familiar with the fill flash advice; I turned the flash off for those pictures since we were taking lots of indoor shots and it was ruining the natural lighting of the scenes. That said, sometimes firing the flash screws with the camera's light meter and might have caused it to underexpose the sky, but I should have tried shots with the flash on and off to see which came out better. Keep in mind this was around the 50th picture I took of Kerry that afternoon, so some of the variables had fallen out of my brain at this point, I fear. :)

Congratulations to my good friend Micah, who has just accepted a job as a user interface designer at eBay. Or perhaps I should be saying "Congratulations to eBay, on their success in snagging one of the greatest interface designers to come out of the CMU MHCI program (or any other, for that matter)"! In a few months, if you buy or sell something on the world's online marketplace™, your user experience will be brought to you in part by Mr. Alpern.
Combine this with Kevin's success at landing an offer from the illustrious Google, and its looking like I'll have friends in high places in the not-too-distant future. I'm counting on you guys to remember me while you're out there changing the world... :)
